The monument, once the main Gothic church in the capital, was ruined by the earthquake of 1755 and was not rebuilt. It constitutes one of the main testimonies of the catastrophe still visible in the city. At the moment the ruins house the Carmo Archaeological Museum.
The nucleus of Gothic tombs includes D. Fernando Sanches (early 14th century), decorated with scenes of wild boar hunting, and the magnificent tomb of King Fernando I (1367-1383), transferred from a convent in Santarém to the museum. Also worthy of mention is a statue of a king from the 13th century (perhaps D. Afonso Henriques), as well as Roman, Visigothic and even two Peruvian mummies.
