The idea of building this small temple arose in 449 a. C. after peace with the Persians. However, Pericles opposed the lifting and the works were not started until 421 a. Ç.
The temple was finally built around 425, four years after Pericles' death. The project was entrusted to Kalíkrates, who designed an ionic temple that had to adapt to its small space, suppressing the pronaos. It is located in the bastion that flanks the Propileus and was dedicated to commemorating the victories of Alcibiades, who were a temporary armistice in the catastrophic Peloponnese war.
The building as a whole has a fairly simple structure, sometimes it looks more like a design or model than a temple itself, because of its dimensions and the novelty of its design.
The Nike Aptera Temple, as its name implies, was basically an altar dedicated to victory, so it need not be overly large, as, as in all Greek temples, ceremonies and sacrifices were performed abroad, with the interior being dedicated to custody. of the images of the gods.
