In the year 111 a. C., during the reign of Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty, the Shi An district was established. The establishment of this county could be considered as the origin of the present city. In 507 the city received the name of Guizhou.



Guilin prospered during the Tang and Song dynasties. The city served as a link between the central government and the southern border areas; Therefore, several military garrisons were installed that served as border protection. Several canals were built throughout the city that were used as a means of transportation. Here agricultural products traveled from the fertile plain of the Yangtze River to the southern end of the empire.



During the Ming Dynasty, Guilin became the capital of Guangxi Province. In 1914 the capital was taken by the city of Nanning. In 1921, Guilin became one of the army headquarters led by Sun Yat-sen.



From 1940 the city received its current name. In 1981, the central government ruled that Guilin, along with four other cities (Beijing, Hangzhou and Suzhou), should be given special protection to preserve their cultural heritage and landscapes.



Known as the City of Bayans, it enjoys the name "First under the sky" and lies in the northeast of Guangxi Autonomous Region and on the west bank of the Lijiang River. It is world famous for its beautiful hills, clear rivers and limestone caves. They say "Guilin's hills and rivers are the best under the sky." The caves to visit: Seven Star Cave, Diecui Hill, Elephant Trunk Hill, Duxiu Peak, Mount Fubo, etc. Walking through Lijiang allows you to enjoy the landscapes of the shores that are an unforgettable paradise.
