On top of a hill, dominating the panorama of Prague, the district of Malá Strana and the hill of Petřín, stand two white towers of the Convent of Strahov. In addition to one of the most beautiful sights in Prague, you will discover an exceptional baroque library and a rich collection of paintings in the Abbey's gallery.
In the mid-12th century, a premonstratensian monastery was founded at the request of Emperor Vladislaus II. A first Romanesque abbey was built in the 1180s and rebuilt several times over the centuries. In the 17th century, the relics of St. Norbert, founder of the Order, were transferred to Prague from the Protestant monastery of Magdeburg, thus considerably increasing the prestige of Strahov Abbey.
Unlike other convents, Strahov escaped the brutal closures and destructions imposed by Joseph II throughout the empire in the late eighteenth century. Expelled by the Communists, members of the Premonstratensian community were able to return to the convent only after the Velvet Revolution.
The interior of the grounds has a bucolic charm that seems to be out of time: you can admire the Chapel of St. Roch, built in the reign of Rodolfo II and the majestic church of Our Lady of the Assumption, built by Anselmo Lurago in the eighteenth century, with a beautiful stucco decoration and baroque details.
The visit of the baroque library is an unforgettable moment: it is made up of rooms of theology and philosophy, arched and decorated with splendid details and stucco, huge wooden shelves, carving works and a rich collection of books of the convent. In the corridor that connects the two rooms, a "curiosity closet" with naturalistic collections is exposed.
Open every day from 9am to 12pm and from 1pm to 5pm.
Closed on December 25th.
Art lovers will also be able to visit the gallery of paintings (Strahovska obrazarna), whose collection includes the famous "Madonna of Strahov" of the fourteenth century.
