The construction we can see today dates from 1760.
Inside the church, various works of art are preserved, such as the Christ of Agony or Santo Cristo de Burgo, made of polychrome wood made by the Spanish sculptor Martínez Montañés and given, according to tradition, by Philip II. Next to it is the golden and polychrome pulpit made in the eighteenth century with a German Baroque style. In the center of the main altar is the image of the Virgin of Mercedes brought in 1548 from Cuzco, being one of the first images that arrived in Chile. In the left tower there is a huge bell carved with a German carillon, the first in Santiago, inaugurated in 1928. The church also has the largest organ in Chile. On the second floor of the convent is the small museum of La Merced. From the convent there is also the courtyard of the Virgin, a quiet garden that forms the cloister.
