In 1905, it was transformed into a museum by Queen D. Amelia, wife of King D. Carlos, under the name Museum of Royal Cars that, after the Republican coup, had its name altered.
Made in Portugal, Italy, France, Austria and Spain, the coaches span three centuries and range from simple to sophisticated. The main gallery in the Louis XVI style, is occupied by two rows of cars built for Portuguese royalty. The collection begins with the trip by bus of Felipe I of Portugal (II of Spain), wood and red leather, from the 17th century. the cars are covered in red velvet and gold, with sculpted exteriors and decorated with allegories and real weapons, work called golden carving. The lines end with three great baroque trainers made in Rome by the Portuguese ambassador to the Vatican D. Rodrigo Almeida e Menezes, Marquis of Abrantes in embassy sent to Pope Clement XI at the behest of King D. João V. These coaches have interiors 5 tons luxurious and life-size golden sculptures, for many years no European monarch sent embassies to the Vatican for not being able to match such a magnitude.
They stand out, among others, the Cars of the Crown, of D. João V and the Carriage of the Crown, commanded to execute by D. João VI, when he returned from Brazil and that was used by the last two kings in his acclamations.
It is the most visited museum in Portugal.
