The Palace of Fairs, an immense functionalist building built in the 1920s, is fascinating for several reasons. The avant-garde work of the architects Oldřich Tyl and Josef Fuchs, is a manifesto in favor of modernity for its simplicity, whiteness, straight lines and the illumination of its spaces, especially the impressive central hall that gives access to the eight floors of the building.
Originally used for industrial machine exhibitions, the building was destroyed by a fire in the 70's and had its reconstruction threatened before it became the place that houses the modern and contemporary art collections of the National Gallery. Considering the majesty of the building, there is no doubt that the works are in a place made to measure. All areas of artistic creation are represented: from painting and sculpture, to architecture, design, furniture, photography, set design and the graphic arts.
The museum visit is a journey through modernity. Among other things, it is worth mentioning the rooms dedicated to the French collections of the 19th and 20th centuries. They are the result of fruitful relations established between France and the Czech Republic during the period between the wars and of the interest taken by the artists, collectors and historians of the art of Bohemia for the French works of the time. Careful acquisitions, made with generous donations, helped build a unique collection that includes works by the most famous French artists: Delacroix, Carpeaux, Rodin, Courbet, Monet, Pissarro, Gauguin, Cézanne, Picasso's Parisian works (in large numbers in this museum ), Derain, Dufy, Bourdelle ...
Less well-known internationally, the Czech art of the twentieth century is worth to be known for the surprises it reserves. We begin with the presentation of František Kupka's avant-garde work: the collection of the National Gallery allows us to follow every step of its creation process, from its first paintings marked by symbolism, to its radical works of geometric abstractionism. Czech Cubism is present in all spheres of artistic creation and represents a testament to the interest of Czech artists by the French avant-garde movement.
On the second floor, Czech art from the 1930s and 2000s takes us to modern and contemporary art, from the surrealists of the thirties to the installations of kinetic art.
To conclude, it should be noted that the first floor is dedicated to the exhibition of 20th century international works: works by G. Klimt, E. Schiele, J. Miró, A. Tàpies, J. Beuys, T. Cragg, C. Sherman.
