With very ancient origins, it is said that the Hermitage was erected at the command of the first Portuguese king, D. Afonso Henriques, in honor to all crusaders martyred in the taking of Lisbon to the Moors in 1147.
The great pride of the Basilica of the Martyrs is its arched vaulted ceiling with allegories dedicated to King D. Afonso Henriques and to the taking of Lisbon, by Pedro Alexandrino. Other great highlights of this temple is the organ, considered even the best in the country, attributed to Silvério Machado and recently the target of major restoration works.
It has been classified as Property of Public Interest since 1974.
