Inaugurated in 1708, it was built by order of the Countess of Pontével, D. Elvira de Vilhena, then demolished part of the Fernandina Wall of the fourteenth century and a watchtower. Together these two Churches established one of the noble gates of the city.
The temple suffered heavy destruction with the earthquake of 1755, being restored and much altered in 1784, according to the plan of the Architect Manuel Caetano de Sousa, being finished the works only in 1875.
The beautiful Church of the Incarnation is situated in the heart of Lisbon, in the exquisite and mythical Largo do Chiado, in front of the famous Church of Our Lady of Loreto.
The façade of the Temple is in Neoclassical style combined with several late 'Rocaille' elements, with interesting images of Santa Catarina that were part of the old medieval door.
