The Principality of Monaco is a sovereign city-state and therefore a micro-state, situated in the south of France. Bordering the Mediterranean Sea, the principality, founded in 1297 by the House of Grimaldi - to this day its sovereign - is less than 20 kilometers east of the city of Nice and 20 kilometers west of the town of Ventimiglia.
