Neighboring the river Guadiana and the modern waterfalls of the Alqueva Dam, it stands on the mountain Monsaraz, dominating the medieval village and the border with Spain. Its military architecture blends medieval and seventeenth-century elements.
The castle at the highest elevation, has a quadrangular plan, with a schist stone wall and lime reinforced by towers, delimiting the square of arms, where the buildings of the alcáçova and the keep are erected.
The fortifications and the whole intramural group of the town of Monsaraz are classified as National Monument by Decree published on January 2, 1946.
