In a prominent position on the right bank of the river Tagus, the monument was erected to honor the elements involved in the process of the Portuguese Discoveries.
The present one, a replica of the previous one, was erected in concrete with sculptures of lioz stone, rising to 50 meters of height. It was inaugurated in 1960, in the context of the celebrations of the five hundred years of the death of Prince Henry the Navigator.
One of the most interesting views of the monument can be observed from the west in the light of the sunset.
