Historical review:

In 1535 the first encomienda was established in the Tunía region and later others in the Piendamó site, with Sebastián de Belalcázar, Francisco Arévalo, Pedro Matta and Pedro Velasco as encomenderos.



In 1917, the construction of the railway line that would link the city of Cali with the city of Popayán began, approving the layout of the site where Piendamó is today, the first locomotives arrived in this town at the beginning of 1924 and with them a large number of merchants, immigrants and settlers from the Department of the valley and the coffee region, this made possible the formation of an important market, since it was attended by merchants from the Valley and towns such as Cajibío, Silvia, Morales, Caldono, Tunía and Popayán.



Population growth and progress in all areas generated a movement to seek the transfer of the Municipal Head that was in Tunía, to the population of Piendamó; With the issuance of Ordinance No. 10 of April 2, 1934, the transfer was ratified, a situation that generated some incidents among the inhabitants of both places.



Before the arrival of the railroad, many lands were owned by Mr. PEDRO ANTONIO SANDOVAL, who donated some for the construction of the railway station and the market, he also sold many of his lands, which further boosted the commercial movement.





Physical description:

The Municipality of Piendamó is located in the central area of ​​the Department of Cauca at 2 38´´ north latitude and 76 30´´ west longitude, the middle part of the mountainous region of the Piendamó river sub-basin, on the western slope of the mountain range. central, its municipal seat is located on the Pan-American highway 100 km from the city of Cali and 25 km from the city of Popayán.



The Municipality of Piendamó is the second largest coffee producing Municipality at the Departmental level, it contributes to the national economy with the export of flowers, characteristics of its landscapes, aptitude for the use of its lands and institutional presence.-

Limits of the municipality:

It limits to the east with the Municipality of Silvia, to the west with the municipality of Morales, to the north with the Municipality of Caldono and to the south with the Municipality of Cajibío.

Ecology

The water network of the municipality of Piendamó in hierarchical order is made up of the sub-basins of the Piendamó and Ovejas rivers, the Pescador river micro-basin.-
